The New Zealand Transport Agency will be undertaking essential works in the Lyttelton Tunnel on 23, 24, 25 & 26 September 2018

Normal traffic will be restricted to single lane operation for the hours stated, therefore some delays are expected. In addition, restrictions will also apply to the movement of dangerous goods.

Dangerous goods that necessitate tunnel closures will only be allowed to pass through the tunnel between the following periods:

For the night of Sunday 23 September - 9:30 pm to 5:30 am:

  • 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm 
  • 5:30 am - 7:00 am 

For the night of Monday 24 September - 7:00 pm to 5:30 am:

  • 5:30 am - 7:00 am Tuesday morning
  • No availability 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm:

On the nights of 25 & 26 September 

  • 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm 
  • 5:30 am - 7:00 am 

At this stage, the following planned works will be 30 September and 1, 2 & 3 October 2018 where there will be tunnel restrictions (TBC)

NZ Transport Agency apologises for the inconvenience caused to road users, however, these works are necessary and need to be undertaken to maintain and increase the safety and resilience of this essential freight route for both Christchurch and Canterbury.
