There will be short delays on State Highway 74 (QEII Drive) in Christchurch over the next few months as work on a $2.5million safety upgrade continues.

There will be changes to the road layout and a 50km/h speed restriction between Innes Road and Burwood Road until mid-2019.

Higgins Contractors are widening the road shoulders and installing new safety barriers down the middle and on the sides of the highway.

New road markings that are easier to see at night and when it’s wet will also be put in place.

Shoulder widening

Most of the shoulder widening on the northern side of the road is complete, and the final sections will be finished by mid-March.

Night works

Night work is programmed over the next three weeks between 8 pm and 6 am.

This work involves compactors and there will be some construction noise and vibration.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Higgins on 027 276 0603.

Surfacing work

The team will start surfacing work, including chip sealing followed by asphalt, on Friday, 22 February. This work is expected to be
finished by the end of March.

Flexible road safety barrier installation

Work to install safety barriers down the middle and sides of the road will get underway at the start of March through to mid-May.

Once the safety barriers are installed the project team will carry out road marking.

The project is expected to be finished by June 2019
