Scheduled Road Work: Upcoming Interruptions on the Southland State Highway Network

Delays: Scheduled Road Work

Upcoming Interruptions on the Southland State Highway Network

Last week was a challenge for everyone living in or travelling within Southland.  Thanks for your patience as our team worked hard to re-open highways and manage those which needed to remain closed for the safety of all road users.  Many people remain affected by the flooding and our thoughts go out to them.

In terms of the Southland network, the only remaining disruption from the flooding is a speed restriction at McNab just out of Gore.  While the road into Milford remains closed, the NZ Transport Agency reports good progress has been made building a four-wheel drive, single-lane route into Milford for urgently needed services, tradespeople and contractors.

Interruptions on the Southland State Highway network

Maintenance and renewal work on state highways continues this month and next week you can expect delays and disruptions at the following locations for this work:

For information on work or events on the State Highway that may have an impact on your travel in the coming week you can look here, these are listed below also.  The works are weather dependent so timing may alter based on this.

There is usually a temporary speed limit of 30 km/h at each site, please slow down (including when the sites are unattended) so all our crews can get home safe to their families each night, and so that repairs on the highways take hold.  Thanks, we appreciate your patience at these sites!

Events coming up in the region which may have an impact on traffic volumes:

  • Feb 12th – 14th – Waimumu Field Days
  • Feb 23rd – Cobra Rod & Custom Club Street Drags (Gore)

Other points to note:

  • Avon Street, in Gore, will be partially closed to traffic from Monday 20 January until about Tuesday 31 March to allow Gore District Council to resurface the road and upgrade underground services.  Due to this, there will be a detour for southbound traffic (including heavy traffic which would normally use this bypass) via Hokonui Drive/SH94, turning left at the roundabout at the intersection with Main Street/SH1.
  • Demolition of the Inner City Block in Invercargill is now underway.  It is unlikely that this will have much impact on SH1 and SH6 in Invercargill, however, there will be an increase in traffic accessing the site in this area

Please drive safely, be patient on the roads and arrive at your destination safely.
