Overnight, from Sunday 2 October to Thursday 20 October, Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency will close a section of State Highway 60 Tākaka Hill, between Riwaka Valley Road, Riwaka and Aaron Creek Road, Upper Tākaka, to undertake pavement (road) resurfacing works.  Alongside this, we will also do other road maintenance work, such as water channel clearing.

This work is part of our annual summer maintenance programme to protect our state highways.

We have chosen to close the road overnight when there is less traffic to ensure maintenance and improvement works can be completed in the shortest possible time, with the smallest amount of disruption.

The road will be closed overnight, Sunday to Thursday nights, between 8.00 pm and 5.30 am from the evening of Sunday 2 October until the morning of Friday 21 October.  If weather or unforeseen circumstances interfere with the planned works, the closure may be extended by three nights, from Tuesday, 25 October to the morning of Friday, 28 October.

The road will be opened at 1.00 am each night for traffic queued at the two road closure points: Aaron Creek Road and Riwaka Valley Road.   For road users who wish to travel over Tākaka Hill at the 1am opening, vehicles need to be at the closure points by the following times:

  • Aaron Creek Rd closure point by 12.30am or
  • Riwaka Valley Rd closure point by 1am

Temporary speed restrictions will be in place, and traffic management staff will control traffic.

How will this work affect you?

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause you.

If you have difficulty getting to or from your property during these works, please don’t hesitate to contact Fulton Hogan staff on site. They will help you in any way they can.

For your safety and the safety of our road crews, please drive carefully and stick to the temporary speed limits that may be in place.

A big thank you from Waka Kotahi.

On behalf of Waka Kotahi, thank you in advance for your patience and understanding while we do this important work in your community.

In future, we intend to continue using these night closures up to four times a year to carry out preventative maintenance.
