5pm UPDATE: SH2 Waioweka Gorge to remain closed over the weekend

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 16 Jan 2026 4:59pm | Bay of Plenty

Additional slips and surface flooding on SH2 between Matawai and Waioweka mean it is not safe for our crews to clear debris or reopen the road today.

A helicopter assessment of the road undertaken this afternoon shows significant over and underslips at multiple sites along the road.

With movement still occurring and rivers and streams flowing high, it is not safe for our teams to be on the ground.

People are urged to delay travel where possible or allow plenty of extra time for a detour via State Highway 35.

The road will be assessed over the weekend and an update provided on Monday morning.

Due to heavy rain this morning, SH2 between Opotiki to Gisborne (Waioweka Gorge) is now closed in both directions due to multiple slips and surface flooding.
