UPDATE:10 November - A busy week ahead for roadworks on State Highway 2 Hutt Valley

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 13 Nov 2025 2:10pm | Wellington

Roadworks will be underway at the State Highway 2/Moonshine Hill Road intersection next week as safety improvements at the intersection near completion.

Contractors will be finalising power and communication connections to the new traffic lights, installing loop (traffic light) sensors into the road and landscaping works. Testing of the new lights will also be done, but they are not yet operational.

The work will require further traffic management, and this will include a full northbound road closure between Fergusson Drive (Silverstream) and Whakatiki Street on Sunday to Wednesday nights (16 – 19 November), between 9 pm and 4.30 am.

A full road closure between Fergusson Drive (Silverstream) and Whakatiki Street is planned for Thursday, 20 November, between 9 pm and 4:30 am.

A local road detour will be available via Fergusson Drive through Upper Hutt. This will require extra travel time.

Riverstone Terrace residents will retain access at all times and are encouraged to approach contractors for assistance if they need help.

Further updates will be provided soon about the outcome of the speed limit review and when the intersection will be fully operational with traffic lights.

Works schedule and detour map:

  • Sunday to Wednesday nights (16-19 November). 9 pm – 4.30 am
  • SH2 CLOSED northbound between Fergusson Drive (Silverstream) and Whakatiki Street.
  • Thursday night (20 November). 9 pm – 4.30 am
  • SH2 fully CLOSED between Fergusson Drive (Silverstream) and Whakatiki Street.
  • Local road detour available via Fergusson Drive

10 November

Tomorrow night’s road closure on State Highway 2 at Upper Hutt has been extended to Gibbons Street.

The road will now be closed tomorrow night (Tuesday 11 November) from 9pm til 4.30am, between Fergusson Drive (Silverstream) and Gibbons Street.

The detour will be clearly signposted.

6 November

Drivers travelling through the Hutt Valley on State Highway 2 next week are encouraged to be ready for road works at multiple locations.

Contractors will be hard at work completing resurfacing works, and other projects – all part of ongoing investments and improvements  to the highway corridor.

State Highway 2 Upper Hutt resurfacing

Contractors have completed all the resurfacing on the highway between Whakatiki Street and Totara Park Road.

The next step is to resurface the road at the Moonshine Hill Rd intersection.

This will require two closures:

  • One will be for road resurfacing. It will require a full closure of the highway for all traffic on Tuesday and Thursday nights  (11 & 13 November), between 9 pm and 4 am, between Fergusson Drive (Silverstream) and Whakatiki Street.
  • It will be followed by a northbound closure on Wednesday night (12 November), also between 9pm and 4:30am. This is for work at the State Highway 2/Moonshine Hill Road intersection.

The work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled if bad weather occurs. There will also be a 50 km/h temporary speed limit in place at resurfacing sites during the day.

The detour will require extra travel time and road users should plan their trips accordingly.

Works schedule and detour map

  • Tuesday 11 November and Thursday 13 November, 9pm – 4am
    • SH2 CLOSED between Fergusson Drive (Silverstream) and Whakatiki Street.
    • Local road detour available via Fergusson Drive
  • Wednesday 12 November. 9pm – 4am
    • SH2 CLOSED to northbound traffic between Fergusson Drive (Silverstream) and Whakatiki Street.
    • SH2 will be OPEN for southbound traffic
    • Local road detour available via Fergusson Drive
  • Schedules may change if bad weather occurs.

State Highway 2/Moonshine Hill Rd safety improvements

Construction of the new intersection at Moonshine Hill Road is almost finished, with most work now to be done off the highway and on Moonshine Hill Road

This involves putting in place the wiring connections to make the traffic lights operational.

Manor Park southbound offramp resurfacing

Repairs and resurfacing are also planned for the Manor Park southbound offramp on Sunday and Monday nights (9 & 10 November)

This has been timed to coincide with a night closure and maintenance work on State Highway 58, but it will require the offramp to be closed on Monday night between 9pm and 4:30am,  when contractors will resurface it.

4 Nov 2025 traffic bulletin: Reminder: State Highway 58 – planned night closure this Sunday(external link)

While this work is being completed, southbound traffic wanting to access State Highway 58 will have to  detour via State Highway 2 and Melling Link (see map below). Drivers should allow extra time for their journeys due to the length of this detour.

Works schedule and detour map

  • Sunday, 9 November, 10 pm - 4 am (as part of the SH58 maintenance closure)
  • Manor Park Southbound offramp CLOSED
  • Monday, 10 November, 9 pm – 4:30 am
  • Manor Park Southbound offramp CLOSED
  • Detour via SH2 and Melling Link to access SH58

State Highway 2 Lower Hutt resurfacing

Drivers can also expect to see activity between the Dowse Interchange and Melling Link as well.

Directional closures are planned for the highway on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights next week (10,12, and 13 November) to allow road crews to complete resurfacing work on both the north and southbound lanes. The closures will be in place between 9 pm and 4:30am each night.

A local road detour will be available through Lower Hutt. However, it will take longer to travel, and drivers should plan accordingly. A lower speed limit applies on the detour and drivers must follow it at all times.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance appreciate this work will create delays for drivers. However, this section of State Highway 2 is well-used and carries around 20 thousand vehicles in each direction every day. This means regular maintenance of the road’s surface is essential, and it ensures it remains reliable and resilient for the thousands of drivers who use it daily.

Resurfacing work along this section of State Highway 2 is expected to be ongoing for around three weeks. Updates will be provided as it progresses.
