Additional overnight closures for HB Expressway next week

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 7 May 2025 4:32pm | Hawke’s Bay

A stretch of State Highway 2 Hawke’s Bay Expressway will close next week for 2 additional nights.

Work is underway this week repairing the Tutaekuri River Bridge abutments, along with other maintenance work including line marking on the expressway.

Crews are onsite 8pm to 5am each night and had expected to complete the work early this Saturday morning.

However the abutment repairs have taken longer than anticipated and crews will need to return to the bridge next Thursday (15 May) night and Friday (16 May) night to complete asphalting.

During next week’s work (8pm to 5am both nights), the expressway will be closed between Links Road and Meeanee Road.

Southbound vehicles will be detoured onto Meeanee Road, Awatoto Road, State Highway 51, Te Ara Kahikatea, Pākōwhai Road. The reverse will apply for northbound vehicles.

Unfortunately, there is no HPMV detour for this closure. Emergency vehicles will need to use the detours.

Please note the temporary bridge at Waiohiki is restricted to 8 tonne MAX at 30km/hr.

For more information on restrictions on the Tutaekuri Bridge (Waitangi) on State Highway 51, please see our previous traffic bulletin.
