Ashburton roadworks to impact SH1 travel

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 16 Feb 2026 12:12pm | Canterbury

Roadworks due to start soon on State Highway 1 in and around Ashburton may mean delays or detours that road users are advised to plan for.

From Sunday 22 February, delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected as resurfacing work is scheduled to begin on State Highway 1/Archibald Street near Carters Terrace in Tinwald, carrying through until Thursday 5 March. Work is due to take place Sunday-Thursday, 7pm to 5am each day, with road users asked to stop on demand and a 30km/h speed restriction at the work site.

There is also road reconstruction work scheduled just south of Tinwald, at the Longbeach Road intersection with SH1, from Tuesday 24 February. SH1 is scheduled to be reduced to a single lane on weekdays through to Wednesday 11 March. From 7am to 6pm, northbound traffic will be detoured via Winslow Westerfield Road and Maronan Road (see map below), and southbound traffic will remain on SH1. From 6pm to 7am, the site will be open to both southbound and northbound traffic, operating under temporary traffic lights. At weekends, both lanes are due to be open but under speed restrictions. Delays of up to 15 minutes apply here too.

Both lots of roadworks are weather dependent and may be postponed/rescheduled. If this happens notice will be provided.

While the overlap of the two lots of work is not ideal, wet weather so far this summer has impacted the roading programme, and it is important to complete the work within the summer maintenance season. People travelling on SH1 should be aware of the potential cumulative delays. We thank people for their patience and understanding.
