Asphalt resurfacing on the agenda for a stretch of SH3, Whanganui
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 2 Oct 2025 6:59am | Manawatū-Whanganui
A stretch of State Highway 3 Carlton Avenue in Whanganui will be reduced to a single lane while crews carry out asphalt resurfacing this month. From next Monday (6 October), asphalt resurfacing work will be completed on Carlton Avenue between Alma Road and Heads Road in Whanganui.
These road renewal works will take place over a period of 3 weeks under a one-way road closure (weather permitting). Crews will be onsite Monday to Friday between 6am and 6pm. The work is expected to be finished at midday on Friday 24 October.
During the 3-week period, a one-way road closure will be in place on SH3 from Alma Road to Heads Road. During the closure period the direction in which traffic will be detoured will change part way through the closure duration. The detour is suitable for HPMV.
- From the Monday 6 October to Wednesday 15 October, northbound traffic will detour using Heads Road to Mosston Road to Fitzherbert Avenue and back to SH3. Southbound traffic will travel through site on SH3.
- From Thursday 16 October to Friday 24 October, southbound traffic will detour using Fitzherbert Avenue to Mosston Road to Heads Road and back to SH3. Northbound traffic will travel through site.
- The road will be open outside of work hours - at nights and on weekends.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi thanks all motorists for their patience during the time. We’re reminding drivers to drive to the conditions and be careful when driving through the area.
Please note, if the first phase of work (asphalting the northbound lane) is completed ahead of schedule, crews may begin the second phase of work (asphalting the southbound lane) earlier than Thursday 16 October. This would mean the change in detour direction for road users may be brought forward.
The detour is expected to add 10 minutes to journey times. Access to residents and businesses remains, please speak to roadworkers on site.
