Auckland Harbour Bridge update tomorrow
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 12 Sep 2025 5:17pm | Auckland
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) advises that the Auckland Harbour Bridge will no longer be required to close to traffic southbound tomorrow for a planned protest. NZ Police have informed NZTA that the protest march no longer intends to cross the bridge due to predicted wind levels.
High winds may impact the Auckland Harbour Bridge for road users tomorrow with MetService advising some gusts potentially reaching 75- 85km/h after midday and continuing to build. Gusts could briefly reach as high as 90km/h early afternoon.
When wind gusts reach higher than 75km/h speeds limits may be reduced and some lanes on the bridge may close. If wind gusts reach 90km/h, we would need to fully close the bridge for short periods because it’s unsafe for any vehicle to be on the bridge and the bridge structure is vulnerable to vehicle impacts.
Motorist are advised to drive to the conditions and pay attention to electronic message boards on the motorway, which will advise if any lane closures and reduced speed limits are required.
We work with MetService to monitor conditions to ensure we are making decisions based on up-to-date and accurate information on predicted and current wind speeds. We use this information to determine risk and implement speed reductions, lane closures or bridge closures.
We encourage all travellers to check back on our real time channels including the NZTA Journey Planner and our NZTA Auckland social media pages on the day before travelling. Any public transport impacts will be advised via the AT Mobile app and website.
