Cambridge expressway works move to final stage after Labour weekend

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 22 Oct 2026 10:10am | Waikato

The final stage of asphalt works on the Cambridge section of the State Highway 1 (SH1) Waikato Expressway is scheduled to begin next week from Tuesday 27 October, after Labour weekend.

The off-ramp at the Cambridge Southern Interchange will be closed for the duration of the works, until mid-November.

Northbound motorists travelling from Karāpiro or further south who want to access Cambridge will need to continue to the Victoria Road Interchange (Hautapu) and use the off-ramp there.

Work will take place at night between 9pm and 5am under stop/go traffic management because of the narrow worksite where two lanes merge into one. Temporary speed limits of 50km/h and 70km/h will apply and remain in place during the day.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow extra time and consider alternative routes to help ease traffic.

Please take care through the worksite and check Journey Planner for updates before travelling.

The project began on 1 March 2026 to help keep the expressway safe, resilient and ready for future growth.

Consistently good weather and high production have put the team ahead of schedule, with asphalt works on the southbound and northbound lanes between Cambridge Southern Interchange and Tamahere now complete.

Completion of Stage 8 will mark the end of the project. NZTA thanks all road users for their patience throughout this important work.
