Clive Bridge, SH51 to close overnight in November for maintenance
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 6 Oct 2025 4:02pm | Hawke’s Bay
State Highway 51 at Te Awa o Mokotūāraro (formerly Clive River) will be closing overnight in the first week of November for bridge joint maintenance.
The bridge spans Te Awa o Mokotūāraro (formerly Clive River).
SH51 at the bridge will be closed for 6 nights from Sunday 2 November to Friday 7 November, 8pm to 4am each night. The road will open 4am Saturday 8 November.
The bridge is structurally sound and crews will be using the closure to carry out joint repairs.
A full closure is required because there is not enough room on the bridge to carry out the work under stop/go traffic management.
The approved detours for all vehicles, including HPMV, are:
- Northbound via Te Ara Kahikatea, Pākōwhai Road, onto SH2 HB Expressway
- Southbound via Awatoto Road, Meeanee Road, onto SH2 HB Expressway.
We’ll also make the most of the night closures to carry out extra maintenance and other work between Clive and Napier under stop/go traffic management, with short delays.
During the day, the bridge will be open and there will be a temporary speed limit in place across the bridge.
Please follow traffic management in place, drive to the conditions and adhere to the speed change, to keep everyone safe.
Emergency services will be assisted through the site if required.
This work is weather dependent and may change at short notice. The contingency dates are Sunday 9 November to Friday 14 November.
