Closure of SH2 Wairoa Bridge Cycleway

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 6 Nov 2026 2:59pm | Bay of Plenty

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi recently advised that permanent repairs would begin on the embankment beside the State Highway Two (SH2) Wairoa Bridge Cycleway, following damage caused by severe weather earlier this year.

The cycleway at embankment level closed so repairs could take place. A temporary arrangement allowed cyclists and pedestrians to cross SH2 safely at road level while the cycleway was closed.

We have been monitoring this arrangement closely. Increased traffic volumes and delays mean we now need to close access completely for cyclists and pedestrians. Delays on this section of SH2 can affect traffic between Te Puna and Ōmokoroa, and sometimes further north.

From Monday 9 November, the temporary crossing arrangement near Wairoa Bridge will no longer be available. The cycleway will remain closed to cyclists and pedestrians until repairs are complete, expected at the end of November.

Cyclists and pedestrians will need to make alternative travel arrangements during the closure.
