Closures at SH6 Coal Creek for watermain work
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 17 Aug 2026 1:14pm | West Coast
The first of two night closures on State Highway 6 near Greymouth is scheduled for next week to allow work that is part of the Coal Creek Overbridge replacement.
State Highway 6 between the Cobden Bridge and the SH6 intersection with Taylorville Road is due to close on Tuesday 25 August from 9pm, reopening at 5am the next day. A second closure is scheduled from 9pm on Monday 7 September, again reopening at 5am the next day.
A detour will be available via State Highway 7 and Taylorville Road (see map below), however the detour route is not suitable for HPMV or overweight vehicles.
These planned closures will allow contractors to carry out excavation work safely and efficiently across the highway and install a new watermain. This watermain installation is part of the early work for the Coal Creek Overbridge replacement, which also involves building a temporary bypass road that will minimise disruption for SH6 traffic while the new bridge is built.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi thanks people for their patience and understanding as this important new bridge is delivered for the region.
