Update: Coromandel state highway network update
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 28 Mar 2026 4:15pm | Waikato
28 March - 4pm
Crews have been working hard to clear slip material on SH25 Coromandel to Matarangi Road.
The road, which is the last remaining closure in the Coromandel following severe weather on Friday, will be reopened by 5pm today. A 50km/ph temporary speed limit will be in place past the slip at Whangapoua Hill.
There are multiple slip sites requiring further work at Kūaotunu, Pumpkin Hill, north of Tairua, and Opoutere. Further clean-up work will continue near Wade Road south of Whitianga over the weekend.
NZTA thanks motorists for their patience as we have worked to reopen this road.
27 March - 5:30pm
Flooding has now receded south of Whitianga and the road is being swept and reopened.
Only one closure remains in place on SH25 (Coromandel to Kuaotunu).

27 March - 4.22pm
State Highway 25 (SH25) Whiritoa and SH25 Tairua to Hikuai have reopened following earlier surface flooding however 2 sections of SH25 remain closed for safety and assessment of damage.
Road users should reduce speed and expect the unexpected. Be aware of sediment, debris, and surface flooding on reopened roads - conditions may still be hazardous.
Updated closures and conditions:
SH25 Coromandel Town to east of Kuaotunu – CLOSED due to slips
SH25 Whitianga to Tairua – CLOSED due to surface flooding
SH25 at Kūaotunu beach and SH25 Pumpkin Hill, which were damaged in the January storms, held up well following recovery work.
SH25 remains in a fragile state after severe weather earlier this year. Road conditions can change rapidly, please be prepared for roads to remain closed or for further closures at short notice.
We have crews on the network now and over the weekend assessing damage and checking conditions to respond to impacts.
