UPDATE Friday 3:20am:
State Highway 2 reopened to southbound traffic around 11:30 pm following a serious two-vehicle crash tonight.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi thanks drivers for their patience and cooperations and emergency services and contractors managed the incident and worked to reopen the highway.
Thursday 9.25pm:
State Highway 2 is closed to southbound traffic at the Dowse interchange following a crash earlier this evening.
The two-vehicle crash, which occurred north of the Ngauranga interchange, was reported at around 8:30 pm.
The highway’s southbound lanes are closed meaning there is no access to Wellington city for drivers travelling from Lower Hutt.
Emergency services are at the scene and there is currently no estimated time for when the highway’s southbound lanes will reopen.
Drivers should avoid the area, delay their travel, or use an alternative route via State highway 58 and State Highway 1.
Updates on the highway’s status can be checked on the NZTA/Waka Kotahi website:
