20 March, 11:18am

Critical safety barrier repairs are underway on State Highway 6 today, following last night’s crash.

Approximately one kilometre of the highway’s median safety barriers was affected by the incident between the Saxton Road offramp and the Salisbury Road roundabout.

Because they are an important safety feature for the well-used route between Nelson and Richmond, repairs are a priority.

Contractors are on-site and a 30 km/h temporary speed limit is in place for the highway’s north and southbound lanes while repairs are ongoing. This work is expected to continue until 5 pm this evening.

Travel delays can be expected, and drivers are asked to take care while travelling through the area.

Further repairs are also planned next week.

7:20pm update

This incident has been resolved, and the highway is now clear.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi thanks drivers for their patience and cooperation while the emergency services and contractors managed the crash site.
