State Highway 2 remains closed to southbound traffic between Petone and Ngauranga following a serious crash earlier this evening.
The highway is closed to southbound traffic from Dowse Drive interchange to the Ngauranga southbound offramp. There is also a northbound lane closure in place near the crash site.
Emergency services are at the scene, including the Police Serious Crash Unit.
Significant delays and disruption can be expected on the highway until the crash has been investigated and the incident has been resolved. There is no estimated time for the highway to reopen to southbound traffic.
Drivers heading from the Hutt Valley to Wellington must avoid the area and use an alternative route.
