Crews back onsite tonight for final resurfacing following SH3 tomo
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 1 Oct 2025 3:50pm | Taranaki
Crews will tonight be returning to the site of a tomo (sinkhole) on State Highway 3 as the final work is completed.
The tomo formed yesterday afternoon at Mangorei Stream Bridge, between Mangorei and Hydro Roads and crews worked through Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning to repair the damage and reinstate access for this key route.
The road was reopened to traffic under a speed restriction early on Wednesday morning.
Crews will be returning to site from 9pm today to complete work resurfacing the bridge expansion joints where the road has been newly asphalted.
The work is expected to be finished by 1am tomorrow (Thursday).
As a result this stretch of SH3 will be under stop/go traffic management and people can expect delays of around half an hour.
Please delay your journey through the area, or plan ahead to take the alternative state highway SH3A.
