NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 27 Aug 2025 1:06pm | Hawke’s Bay
A stretch of State Highway 51’s northbound lane in Napier will be closed during the day tomorrow (Thursday 28 August) for repairs to flexible median barriers.
The road, between Ellison Street and Awatoto Road, will be closed between 10am and 3pm.
All northbound traffic will be detoured left onto Awatoto Road, right onto Te Awa Avenue then right onto Ellison Street, to rejoin SH51.
The detour is expected to add approximately 5 minutes to journey times.
The southbound lane will remain open as normal.
During this closure, crews will be repairing flexible median barriers damaged following last week’s repairs to flexible median barrier. Please note, this section is different from the section repaired last week.

We understand how critical these barriers are to the safety of all road users, preventing people from crossing the centreline, saving lives and the potential for serious injury.
Emergency services will always be assisted through the site if required.
This work is weather dependent. The contingency date is Friday 29 August.
