Delays expected for roadworks on SH7

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 25 Mar 2026 4:13pm | Canterbury

Work including road surface repair and culvert replacement on State Highway 7 will mean delays for some road users travelling across the South Island over the next few weeks.

Delays of up to 30 minutes may be experienced while the work and associated traffic management is in place on the stretch of SH7/Lewis Pass Road, between Maruia Springs and Engineers Camp. This is scheduled for 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, starting Tuesday 7 April; with the work expected to be complete by Friday 1 May 2026.

While the repair to the road surface is the priority, roading crews will be making the most of the traffic management to also complete a number of culvert replacements or repairs, and some tree felling.

This work may be postponed in the event of poor weather. Stay up with the latest on this work and other state highway restrictions at our Journey Planner site.

We thank all road users for their patience while this important work is done to improve the roading network.
