Detour required for State Highway 1 Transmission Gully nightworks
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 29 Jul 2026 2:29pm | Wellington
Drivers intending to head north on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully next Sunday and Monday nights (9 and 10 August) can expect a slightly longer journey.
Road crews will be resurfacing northbound lanes on State Highway 1, just south of where it splits with State Highway 59, between 9 pm and 4:30 am on both nights. Traffic management will be set up from 7pm, so road users should expect delays from then.
Two sections of the motorway will be repaired. Because this is a mill and fill repair that uses heavy machinery and requires road excavation, access through the repair sites will be unavailable for all traffic.
This means the usual direct access to State Highway 1 Transmission Gully won’t be available for drivers heading north to the Kāpiti Coast.
Instead, they will have to detour by either staying on State Highway 59, or by heading north on State Highway 59, exiting at the Mungavin Interchange, then heading south to rejoin State Highway 1 using Kenepuru Link Road (see map below).
Because this is a heavily used section of the motorway (over 20,000 vehicles daily), regular maintenance is critical for keeping it safe and reliable for traffic.
NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance acknowledge this work will affect the public.
To minimise impact on drivers, the work will be done at night when traffic volumes are much lower. However, the alternative routes do require extra travel time, and drivers should factor this into their travel plans.
Road users are asked to follow all traffic management in place, observe all temporary speed limits, and follow the directions of road crews. This helps keep everyone safe.
Resurfacing work requires dry weather to be effective, and these works may be rescheduled if conditions are not suitable. Drivers should check road conditions before they travel.
