Detours required for resurfacing on SH6 Invercargill
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 20 Mar 2026 4:36pm | Southland
Roading crews will be working day and night to minimise disruption and complete upcoming resurfacing of part of State Highway 6/North Road in Invercargill. However, detours will be required for some road users while the work is underway.
Scheduled to begin on Monday 30 March 2026, and to run for about a month, the resurfacing at Waikiwi will require closures of the northbound lane of SH6/North Road, both between Bainfield Road and West Plains Road, and just north of West Plains Road. Traffic in the southbound lane will be unaffected.
When the closure is in place for work between Bainfield Road and West Plains Road, northbound road users will be detoured via Renfrew Street, Gloucester Street and West Plains Road, before rejoining SH6/North Road. Heavy vehicles, including High Productivity Motor Vehicles (HPMV), will need to use Bay Road, Drury Lane, Gloucester Street and West Plains Road. This may mean short delays for road users.
When the resurfacing work shifts and the closure is on SH6/North Road just north of West Plains Road, the detour will be via West Plains Road, Steel Road and Moore Road. All detours will be used when work is happening at the intersection of SH6/North Road and West Plains Road.
The resurfacing is needed because the current road surface is worn and cracked. The existing surface layer will be milled (removed) and paved with new asphalt to strengthen and extend the life and durability of the surface.
The work has been scheduled during the summer construction period, when warmer, drier weather provides the best conditions for laying asphalt. The timing also aligns with school holidays, which helps support smoother traffic management in an area with several schools and high pedestrian activity.
Access for residents and businesses in the area will be maintained.
SH1 closure/stop-go
In addition to this lane closure on SH6/North Road, there is two days of closure scheduled next week for State Highway 1/East Road, near the intersection of Mill Road South, for a culvert replacement. The road will be closed from 6am to 7pm on Tuesday 24 March and Wednesday 25 March, with a detour available via Mill Road North, Findlay Road and Racecourse Road for all vehicles.
This same stretch of SH1/East Road will be open the rest of next week – Monday 23 March, Thursday 26 March and Friday 27 March – but road users will be required to stop on demand at temporary traffic lights, and a 30km/h speed restriction will be in place, from 6am to 7pm daily.
SH93 Mataura partial day closure
There is also an upcoming closure for State Highway 93/Bridge Street in Mataura. The road will be closed between Kana Street and McQueen Avenue from 9am to 2pm on Saturday 28 March.
A detour will be available for light vehicles via Kana Street, Wyndham Road, Edendale-Wyndham Road and onto SH1. For heavy vehicles, including HMPV, the detour is via SH1 from Clinton to Mataura.
If a change to the schedules of the various work described above is required, notification will be provided. We thank people for their patience while this necessary work is completed.
