UPDATE: Drainage works planned for State Highway 1 Weld Pass (work extended until next week)
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 11 Jun 2025 4:35pm | Nelson and Marlborough
11 June
Because more drainage improvements have been required than originally anticipated, extra time is needed to complete this work at State Highway Weld Pass.
An additional 100 metres of dish channel has had to be built. This improves protection for the highway from water damage.
Stop/Go traffic management and 30 km/h temporary speed limit will remain in place on weekdays, 7am to 5pm, until midday next Thursday (19 June).
NZTA/Waka Kotahi thanks drivers for their patience and cooperation while this essential state highway maintenance is completed.
Delays of up to five minutes can be expected at this work site and road users should allow for extra time while travelling through Weld Pass.
21 May
People travelling between Blenheim and Christchurch can expect to see more road works on State Highway 1, Weld Pass over the next three weeks.
Work will be underway on weekdays from Monday, 26 May, to Friday, 13 June, between 7am – 5pm.
Because the road over the Weld Pass is narrow, and because of the size of machinery being used, stop/go traffic management and a 30 km/h temporary speed limit will be in place while this work is underway. Road users should expect delays of up to five minutes.
Contractors will be replacing a concrete dish channel. They will remove the existing channel, prepare and install a new channel.
Improving and repairing drains helps prevent water damage to the road and reduces the need for bigger and more expensive road repairs in the future.
