A stretch of State Highway 3 at Waitara has closed with fallen trees blocking the highway.

A strong wind warning remains in place for Taranaki until 4pm today.

SH3 is currently closed between Princess Street and Nelson Street and crews are on scene to clear the fallen trees.

A detour is currently in place.

It follows another section of SH3 being closed earlier this morning as a result of fallen trees. That section of road is now open.

Please be extremely careful while driving around the region and be alert for the possibility of fallen trees or debris.
