Weather conditions have forced a change to the timing of planned roadworks for State Highway1 /Dunedin Southern Motorway at Green Island (highlighted in the previous bulletin below).

This work, excavating parts of the road surface and reinstating it with new asphalt — and requiring southbound lane closures, will now be done from tonight through until Friday 30 January (inclusive). The length of each night’s closure is also being extended, from the originally planned 8pm to 6am window, to a longer 7pm to 6am daily closure.

11 December 2025 – Essential maintenance scheduled for SH1 in Dunedin

Overnight closures are scheduled for parts of State Highway 1 in Dunedin next month as essential roadworks are carried out to keep the highway in good condition for road users.

Crews are due to work through January 2026 to excavate parts of the road surface in different areas, and to reinstate it with new asphalt.

The work is set to begin on Sunday 11 January on the southbound lanes of SH1/Castle Street, between St Andrew Street and Stuart Street. Closures are due to be in place for this section of Castle Street for three nights starting 11 January, from 8pm to 6am each day. Road users can also expect detours, side road closures, uneven surfaces and temporary speed limits in place through the course of this work.

From Monday 12 January, similar work on the road surface is due to take place on the southbound lanes of SH1/Dunedin Southern Motorway at Fairfield, with closures expected to take place over three nights, from 8pm to 6am each day.

A third piece of work will happen from Sunday 18 January on the southbound lanes of SH1/Dunedin Southern Motorway at Green Island and is expected to run for five nights of closures between 8pm and 6am each day.

In addition to the lane closures, the work on the motorway will also come with detours, uneven surfaces and temporary speed limits for the duration of the work.

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and its contractors will be doing what they can to minimise disruption to the travelling public, residents and businesses, but some disruption is inevitable. Weather conditions and completion requirements may delay the start and duration of work, and notification will be provided through NZTA’s channels if changes to the schedule are needed.
