Flooding and slips making driving hazardous in the Coromandel
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 18 Apr 2025 4:15pm | Waikato
UPDATE 4.15pm
NZTA contractors have worked hard to clear slips and debris off the road around the Coromandel Peninsula today and ensure the safety of road users.
State Highway 25 (SH25) at Hikuai remains closed due to flooding. While water has retreated, there is still surface flooding, which could deepen with tonight’s high tide.
The Thames Coast is open but road users should be mindful of surface water and debris.
State Highway 25A (SH25A) between Kōpū and Hikuai will be fully open from around 6pm following clearance of multiple slips.
This updates the information below:
9:26am
State Highway 25 (SH25) remains CLOSED at Hikuai, at the intersection with State Highway 25A (SH25A) with flood waters still rising this morning in the Coromandel.
SH25 has RE-OPENED at Manaia following a closure for flooding overnight, however there is still surface water on the road and drivers are advised caution.
There are multiple slips on SH25A between Kōpū and Hikuai, which crews are working to clear, but the road is OPEN under stop/go.
Flooding isolated multiple townships in the Coromandel for a number of hours overnight, with rain continuing to fall today.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) advises that if you need to travel, be ready for difficult driving conditions with surface flooding and slips even on open roads. Anticipate that there could be trees or debris on the road just around the next corner.
Slow down and keep a safe following distance from the vehicle in front. Keep your headlights on to increase visibility.
Watch out for NZTA contractors who are out clearing slips and installing temporary traffic management where required.
Please adhere to signposted speed limits and follow the directions of the team.
