Gantry installation works for Mackays Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre

Night works are coming for State Highway 1 Raumati Straights as part of the construction of the new Mackays Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre (CVSC).

Contractors will be working in the highway's southern lanes next week, installing a gantry that will hold an electronic sign/message board. Once the CVSC is operating, the sign will be used to direct heavy vehicles to the centre for safety and compliance inspections.

The work will be carried out between 10pm on Monday 30 March and 2am Tuesday 31 March. The highway will remain open to traffic, but rolling blocks will be used to slow and control southbound traffic while the gantry is being installed.

The work has been timed to be done at night when traffic volumes are lower. However, short travel delays (10-15 minutes) can be expected while the gantry installation is being completed and rolling blocks are being used.

The work is weather-dependent and cannot take place in high winds. If conditions are unsuitable, the installation will be rescheduled. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before they travel.

CVSCs allow police to carry out thorough checks on heavy vehicles, including weight, road user charges compliance, and driver impairment. Once complete, the centre will use weigh-in- motion scales and advanced screening technology to identify noncompliant vehicles while keeping compliant freight operators moving efficiently.
