Heavy rainfall and flooding has closed a section of State Highway 3 through Awakino Gorge.

The road is currently closed between Mokau and Mahoenui and there’s no viable detour.

Crews are en route currently to start pumping the water away from site.

The road will remain closed until the area is clear and it is safe to reopen.
