If you’re travelling through Tararua district this Labour day, please take extra care as heavy rainfall and strong winds are set to batter the district.

Metservice has issued a heavy rain warning from 2pm today around the Tararua range – with between 120 and 150 mm of rainfall expected.

A strong wind warning is also in place for the district from 4pm today.

The warnings bring with them the potential for streams and river levels to rise; surface flooding and damage to trees.

Please be extra careful if you’re in a high sided vehicle or on a motorcycle.

“This is when the phrase ‘drive to the conditions’ is crucial,” says Liesl Dawson, System Manager for Manawatū-Whanganui and Taranaki.

“Take your time on the roads. And be alert for surface flooding or debris on the roads. If you’re travelling today, consider adjusting your journey to avoid the heavy rain and strong winds forecast.”

The heavy rain warning will be in place until 2am tomorrow and the wind warning until 1am.
