Highway reconstruction in Central Otago to impact traffic
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 21 Oct 2025 10:49am | Otago
Reconstruction of State Highway 8 at Stableburn, south of Millers Flat, will mean better quality roading – but also some delays for road users over the next few months as the work is carried out.
Work on the 3.1 km stretch of State Highway 8 is scheduled to commence next week, on 28 October. The project will involve initial earthworks and drainage improvements, followed by four consecutive stages of road reconstruction. This is to minimise inconvenience and delays for motorists and effectively manage traffic flow throughout the project.
The construction activities will take place on weekdays between 7am and 6pm, with a full holiday break from 19 December to 12 January 2026, during which no work will be conducted. When work is underway, traffic will be managed through a single lane and road users can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.
It is expected that all works will be completed by April next year.
The work is weather dependent. If significant changes are required to the schedule, we will advise of this.
We thank people for their patience and understanding as this important work is carried out. You can check the latest on the status of the state highways at our Journey Planner site.
