SH2 at Mātāwai open to all traffic – drive with care
State Highway 2 through Mātāwai is now open to light and heavy vehicles.
Ice had earlier closed the stretch of state highway north of Gisborne to heavy vehicles.
Crews are continuing to monitor the road and are ready to assist traffic if needed.
All road users are being urged to drive with extreme care and to the conditions.
Be alert to the possibility of small pockets of ice remaining in shaded areas.
9am – Ice and freezing conditions persisting on SH at Matawai
Motorists travelling through Matawai on State Highway 2 are being urged to travel with extreme caution.
Crews have been using grit on the road, however with current conditions, combined with rainfall, the road has iced over again.
The stretch of road has now reopened to heavy vehicles.
However all vehicles will be piloted through the area near the Fulton Hogan Quarry.
Please drive with extreme caution and to the conditions, and adhere to any guidance from the pilot vehicles.
Crews are actively monitoring the road.
