State Highway 2 between Ōpōtiki and Gisborne is currently closed to heavy vehicles due to freezing conditions and heavy ice.

Crews have been using grit on the road, however with current conditions, combined with rainfall, the road has iced over again.

A pilot vehicle will guide light vehicles through.

The road is expected to be open again to heavy traffic from around 9am.
