State Highway 8 between Fairlie and Twizel is now reopened. However, challenging conditions are likely to remain for the next few days, with potentially more snow and ice persisting in the freezing temperatures. Further disruption to travel is possible on state highways in the South Island’s Mackenzie Country.
New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi urges motorists to drive with extreme care, show patience and if they can, avoid non-essential travel in those areas affected by snow and ice.

More freezing weather affecting the central South Island has led to the closure this morning of State Highway 8 between Fairlie and Twizel.
Snow fell overnight but the biggest issue on the road has been ice. Crews are working to break up the ice and spread grit to enable it to reopen.
Other South Island state highways remain open, but motorists are urged to travel with caution through alpine passes and on highways at higher elevations where snow or ice may be an issue.
On State Highway 73 between Springfield and Arthur’s Pass Village (Porters Pass), chains are essential and the road is closed to towing vehicles.
