Improvements and resurfacing planned for State Highway 1 in Picton

State Highway 1 at the southern end of Picton is about to benefit from resurfacing works as part of the ongoing state highway summer maintenance programme.

Contractors will be on site later this month to resurface and repair a 350-metre stretch of State Highway 1/Wairau Road between Dorset and Kent Streets.

With around 8,000 vehicles using the route daily, regular maintenance and resurfacing is critical for keeping the road safe and reliable for drivers and the public.

Because it is a well-used route, the resurfacing work will be done at night when traffic volumes are lower. This will reduce disruptions and delays for road users.

Contractors will complete the work, weather-permitting, between Sunday, 19 October, and Friday, 24 October. Night works will be between 6 pm and 6 am.

Work will be carried out under stop/go traffic management and delays of up to ten minutes can be expected while this work is underway.

A 30 km/h temporary speed limit will remain in place outside of work hours. It is critical drivers respect this lower speed. It is required to protect the road surface and also to prevent damage to vehicles.

Works schedule

  • Sunday 19 October to Friday 24 October
  • Nightworks  6pm–6am
  • Stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 10 minutes
  • Outside of work hours a 30 km/h temporary speed limit applies through the work site
  • Short detours will be in place for residents on Kent Street and Dorset Street who wish to access State Highway 1 during work hours.
