Installation work continues for Mackays Crossing Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 8 Apr 2026 2:23pm | Wellington
Drivers travelling on the Kāpiti Coast can expect to see more activity and travel impacts as construction of the Mackays Crossing Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre (CVSC) continues this month.
Nighttime and daytime works are planned for State Highway 1 and State Highway 59 until the end of April for the project.
Contractors will be installing weigh-in-motion (WIM) plates, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, intelligent transport system (ITS) roadside cabinets, and a gantry structure.
Traffic management, including lane and road closures, will be in place while this work is being completed.
This includes a full northbound closure of State Highway 1, between Porirua and Mackays Crossing on the night of Monday, 20 April (9 pm to 5:30 am).
While this closure is in place, northbound traffic should detour via SH59 and rejoin State Highway 1 at the Mackays Crossing interchange. Drivers should allow extra time for their journeys.
This closure has been scheduled to happen at night to minimise disruption when traffic volumes are lower.
Lane closures are also planned for State Highway 1 and stop/go traffic management for State Highway 59 (see schedule below) over the coming weeks.
Drivers can expect delays while these works are ongoing. They are also weather dependent and may be rescheduled if conditions are unsuitable. Road users are encouraged to check road conditions before they travel.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, follow temporary traffic management, and allow extra time for their journeys.
