From the end of this week, several roads across West Waikato will be getting a spruce‑up, with crews busy resurfacing, rebuilding, and chipsealing key routes to keep the network safe and resilient for everyone. Here’s a what to expect:

SH3 Rukuhia to Te Awamutu

Chipsealing on SH3 Ōhaupō Road between Rukuhia and Te Awamutu begins Sunday 18 January and will run for 2 weeks.

The long worksite has been split into eight sections. Work on the first 4 sections begins Monday 19 January and is expected to take one week to complete. Crews return on Sunday 8 February to complete the remaining 4 sections. Work will take place Sunday to Thursday, both during the day and at night. Stop/go traffic management will be in place throughout, followed by rolling, sweeping, and line marking.

During the works the following local roads will be affected:

  • Access to SH21 Airport Road, Ryburn Road, Thompson Road, Sowerby Road, McFall Road, Rukuhia Road and Narrow Road will remain open, with stop/go in place except at SH21 Airport Road
  • Kaipaki Road and Douch Road will be left in/left out only
  • Only Douch Road residents will be allowed to enter SH3 from Kaipaki Road, by turning right. Stop/go traffic management will be in place at the Kaipaki Road intersection. Douch Road residents will be directed by the traffic controller to enter SH3 and then left into Douch Road. Kaipaki Road residents will not be able to turn right onto SH3, they will need to use the detour route to continue their journey north
  • Jary Road will be closed at the intersection of SH3 – a detour is via Mill Road and West Road to re-join SH3 Ohaupo Road.

SH3/30 Te Kūiti

Resurfacing on SH3 Carroll Street, Awakino Road and SH30 Waitete Road begins on Sunday 18 January. The work will run 5 nights a week (Sunday to Thursday nights only), from 8pm to 6am, for approximately 2.5 weeks.

To enable the work to take place efficiently and safely, there will be stop/go traffic management between Duke Street and SH30 Awakino Road.

SH31 Kawhia Road

A road rebuild will begin on Tuesday 27 January near Te Rauamoa Road, the work will be done in 2 phases, shoulder and drainage work and then the road rebuild, the work is expected to take 6 weeks to complete working between 7am to 7pm each day.

The road rebuild involves digging out the existing road layers and replacing them layer by layer. Finally, the road is swept and line-marking reapplied. While the work is ongoing stop/go traffic management will be in place 24/7 with a temporary speed limit, up to 10 minutes delays can be expected.
