When it comes to state highway maintenance, keeping the streetlights on is just as important as resurfacing the road.

They are critical for keeping drivers safe, particularly when using motorway on and offramps. Good visibility is essential for all drivers, particularly at night when they move from a higher speed motorway environment to local roads with lower speed limits.

Next week Wellington Transport Alliance work crews will be replacing the streetlights at the State Highway 1 Churton Park/Glenside southbound offramp on Wednesday night (8 April), between 9 pm and 4 am.

For safety reasons – lighting and use of heavy equipment – the offramp must be closed while this work is being completed. This will affect traffic needing to access Churton Park, Glenside, and Grenada.

Drivers will have to detour by taking the southbound offramp at Johnsonville and rejoining State Highway 1 to travel north to take the Churton Park/Glenside northbound offramp instead. This is a longer route and will require extra travel time.

The detour is also different for light and heavy vehicles. Light vehicles can turn at the Moorefield/Johnsonville roundabout to return to travel northbound on State Highway 1.

However, this is not suitable for heavy vehicles. They must detour via Johnsonville Road, Broderick Road, and Moorefield Road, before returning to travel north on State Highway 1 (see map below).

Drivers are asked to follow all traffic management, instructions from road crews, and to observe all local road speed limits on the detour route. They are there to keep people safe.
