UPDATE: 2.40pm – SH1 near Kaikōura clear again

State Highway 1 at Goose Bay, south of Kaikōura, is fully open again after a crash partially closed the road. Vehicles involved in the crash have been moved off the road and delays have eased. Road users are asked to travel with care in the area. SH1, both north and south of Christchurch, is expected to at its busiest this afternoon as people return to the city from their long weekend holidays.

Holidaymakers travelling home this afternoon after a break away for the long Easter weekend should be aware of potential delays after a crash on State Highway 1 south of Kaikōura.
The southbound lane of SH1 at Goose Bay is closed, near the intersection with Moana Road, but the northbound lane remains open. Emergency services are working at the crash site.
Road users should plan for delays as traffic is managed at the crash site. The Inland Kaikōura Road/Route 70 is also available.
