Lighting the way - essential light pole replacement works planned for State Highway 2 Silverstream

When it comes to using highway and motorway onramps and offramps, it is critical drivers have good visibility, especially at night.
It is why NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance run a regular maintenance schedule for streetlights and light poles across the Wellington highway network.
Contractors will replace two light poles at the State Highway 2 Silverstream intersection this weekend.
The work will be done on Sunday night, 16 August, between 9 pm and 4:30 am. This has been timed to coincide with lower traffic volumes to minimise disruption to road users.
Because lifting equipment and heavy machinery are needed, the northbound onramp and offramp will be closed while the new streetlight poles are installed. The southbound onramp and offramp will remain open.
Contractors will also use the closure to carry out other maintenance work. This will include weed control and vegetation removal.
It means northbound drivers will have to detour and allow for extra travel time while this work is being completed.
Drivers wanting to head north on State Highway 2 from the Silverstream intersection will have to head south and turn around at the Haywards Interchange.
Northbound traffic on State Highway 2 will not be able to turn directly onto Fergusson Drive at Silverstream.
Instead, they can travel north and turn at the Moonshine Hill Road intersection at Riverstone Terraces, head south, and access the Silverstream intersection from the southbound State Highway 2 offramp.
Alternatively, drivers can use alternative access to and from State Highway 2 through Upper Hutt, such as Whakatiki Street, Gibbons Street and Totara Park Road.
These works are weather-dependent and may be rescheduled if conditions are not suitable. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before they travel.
