UPDATE: Maintenance and drainage works – State Highway 1 Transmission Gully/Te Aranui o Te Rangihaeata

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 12 Nov 2025 2:28pm | Wellington

UPDATE 12 November:

People travelling on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully/ Te Aranui o Te Rangihaeata. Are urged to make sure they stay up to date on ongoing roadworks on the motorway.

Contractors are hard at work on drainage works designed to improve the motorway’s resilience and reduce water damage to the road’s surface.

This week contractors are active at two sites on the route’s southbound lanes - one near Waitangirua and the other near Battle Hill Farm Park.

This is the reason for the ongoing lane closures at these areas. Delays are expected during peak times. Drivers are strongly encouraged to consider using State Highway 59 as an alternative route while these lane closures remain in place. There will be lane closures in place throughout the summer period while we work to complete our summer maintenance programme.

This work continues this week with a full northbound closure planned for the motorway between Linden and the State Highway 58 Pāuatahanui Interchange tomorrow night (Thursday 13 November), between 9 pm and 4:30 am. A similar closure planned for tonight (Wednesday) has been postponed because of forecast bad weather.

This will be followed by a full southbound closure between Mackays Interchange and Linden this weekend, starting 10 am Friday, 14 November to 4:30 am Monday, 17 November.

Contractors will be completing trenching works across the full width of the southbound lanes, which is why a full southbound closure of the motorway is needed. Southbound traffic will be unable to travel through the trenching sites.

Upcoming works and closures:

Next week work crews will continue work at the Waitangirua and Battle Hill sites under 24/7 lane closures.

Another full weekend closure is scheduled for next weekend in one direction which will be confirmed soon. It will run from 10 am Friday, 21 November to 4:30am to Monday, 24 November. More details about this work will be shared before it starts.

Advice for Drivers:

With maintenance work continuing into next year, drivers can expect ongoing lane closures on the motorway and further directional road closures.

These will be communicated in advance, but people are urged to stay up to date on the works and plan their travel carefully.

It is also critical that drivers  follow the temporary speed limits in place and move through work areas at the posted limits. Not only is this safer for drivers and workers, but it also enables a smoother traffic flow and helps minimise delays.

7 November:

Additional work, including a northbound closure, has been added to the upcoming works schedule for State Highway 1 Transmission Gully/Te Aranui o Te Rangihaeata.

The extra work has been scheduled to help ensure the maintenance programme planned for the summer season can be completed as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

It will see road crews carry out essential preparations for installing drainage outlets.

The work will require a full northbound closure of the motorway between Linden and the State Highway 58 Pāuatahanui Interchange next Wednesday and Thursday nights (12 and 13 November), between 9pm and 4:30am.

Northbound drivers must detour via State Highway 59 and State Highway 58 while this work is underway.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi appreciates this work will create travel delays and thanks drivers for their patience and understanding while it is being completed.

5 November:

Regular users of State Highway 1 Transmission Gully are urged to be ready for more planned drainage works on the route starting at the end of this week.

This is part of the extensive programme of road works outlined for the motorway last week. Drivers can expect a lot of work to be ongoing on the motorway from November and throughout summer.

30 October 2025 media release: Transmission Gully summer maintenance work getting underway(external link)

Lane closures are planned for the motorway’s north and southbound lanes between north of the Waitangirua interchange and north of the State Highway 58 interchange.

These closures will be in place 24/7 from 10am Friday 7 November until 10am Friday 14 November.

The motorway will remain open to north and southbound traffic, but the lane closures and a 50 km/h temporary speed limit will affect traffic flows. Travel delays can be expected while this traffic management is in place.

Drivers can use State Highway 59 as an alternative, and it is likely that traffic volumes will be higher on this route while work on Transmission Gully is ongoing. Road users should factor this into their travel plans.

The lane closures are required for drainage improvements underway at three work sites – two north of the State Highway 58 interchange and one near the Waitangirua interchange.

The drainage work will enable a full repair of areas where the road surface has suffered water damage.

Traffic management will be set up from 8:30 am on Friday. Drivers can expect some delays while it is put in place.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi understands these works and other roadworks planned for this summer maintenance season on the Transmission Gully motorway will cause disruptions and delays. However, they are essential repairs, and because the work requires warmer, drier weather to be successful, it must be done over spring and summer.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and stay up to date on the roadworks programme while it is ongoing.

Works schedule

  • 10 am Friday 7 November to 10 am Friday 14 November. 24/7
  • Three drainage sites near SH58 and Waitangirua interchanges
  • Lane closures and 50 km/h temporary speed limit

Other upcoming work

A southbound closure of the motorway is planned for next weekend, starting on Friday, 14 November at 10 am, with the motorway re-opening on Monday, 17 November at 4:30 am.

All southbound traffic will need to detour via State Highway 59. Northbound traffic will have a lane closure between Waitangirua and north of the State Highway 58 Interchange.
