Major resurfacing night works and improvements to continue on State Highway 2 Hutt Valley next week

The state highway summer maintenance season continues on State Highway 2 through the Hutt Valley next week, with night works planned for both Lower and Upper Hutt.

SH2 Lower Hutt works

Road resurfacing work will be underway on Tuesday to Thursday nights (25-27 November), and then again on Sunday night (30 November), at various locations between the Dowse Drive interchange and the Kennedy Good Bridge.

It will require both north and southbound road closures, and drivers will have to use detour routes   through Lower Hutt. These are longer and drivers will need to plan for extra travel time.

These works are weather-dependent, and schedules may change if wet weather occurs. Road resurfacing requires warm and dry weather to be effective and durable.

State Highway 2/Moonshine Hill Road Safety improvements

Project works to improve the safety of this intersection are almost complete, and contractors  will be  completing  various works at this site  next weekend.

This will require a full closure of State Highway 2 for both north and southbound traffic next Sunday night (30 November), between 9 pm and 4:30 am.

Access will remain available for Riverstone Terrace residents, but all other traffic will have to detour via Upper Hutt.

This closure coincides with resurfacing works planned in Lower Hutt (SH2 Melling Link to Kennedy Good Bridge northbound closure). It means people travelling the length of the Hutt Valley can expect longer journeys because of the required detours at both sites. It is critical they plan their trips accordingly and allow for extra travel time.

Advice for drivers

Please plan ahead and check the NZTA/Waka Kotahi Journey Planner before you travel. It has the latest information about roadworks and other incidents on the state highway network.

Respect all  temporary speed limits at work sites. They are there to keep the public and road workers safe. When resurfacing is underway, lower speed limits help protect the road surface and vehicles from damage.

When detours are in place on local roads, follow all local road speed limits. Because speed limits on local roads may be lower, it means journeys may be longer – allow for extra travel time.
