Mangamuka Gorge down to one lane due to underslip

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 25 Sept 2025 3:15pm | Auckland

Road users are advised to take care through the Mangamuka Gorge, with the route down to one lane due to an underslip on the south side of the gorge, which has formed following wet weather.

Due to some cracking in the northbound lane, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) has closed the lane for safety.

This site was one being  actively monitored following the August 2022 weather event, which caused 36 slips through the Mangamuka Gorge, 16 of which were critical and all were repaired as part of the recovery work. The repaired sites have continued to hold up well.

Geotechnic engineers were on site yesterday. The location is complex due to the proximity to the river and the geotech assessment will help inform design options for a fix. NZTA appreciates this is a critical route for Northland and our team is working at pace to confirm our approach and get construction underway as soon as possible.

Our first priority is safety given a number of blind corners on the approach.  A temporary speed limit is in place and road users are asked to please slow down and adhere to stop/go traffic management and follow the advice of our team on site.
