Median barrier installation SH1 Bombay

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 1 May 2026 7:09pm | Auckland

From Sunday 10 May to mid-June 2026 we will begin upgrading the median barriers on State Highway 1 (SH1) between Ramarama and Mill Road, Bombay.

Full southbound closures will be required Sundays to Thursdays between 9pm and 5am to create a safe working environment. This will also allow the team to complete the installation more quickly.

When the closures are in, motorists will be detoured via Great South Road.  This will add approximately 10 minutes to your journey. Please prepare for delays travelling through the area.

The new barriers will improve safety for motorists in the event of a high impact incident and keep the network safe and reliable.

In preparation for the upgrade we will begin installing temporary barriers on the northbound median between Sunday 3 and Wednesday 6 May, 9pm to 5am.  A full northbound closure will be in place at night for the installation.

At the end of installation another 5 nights will be required to remove the temporary barriers.

We appreciate the full closures will be disruptive and will include other works required along this section of state highway to maximise the closure opportunity.  We will also be using the southbound closures to install an overhead electronic sign near Runciman Road. Additional northbound closures may be required to complete the installation, but this will be after the barrier upgrades have been completed.

Over dimension vehicles will need to be escorted through the closures. When the northbound closure is in vehicles over 5 metres wide may need to be stacked until the site is safe to travel through. Please contact our network access coordinators for instructions on:
