Drivers will experience lane closures next week for surfacing repairs around the new roundabout at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 29 in Piarere.

On Monday 28 July the SH1 northbound (Hamilton exit) of the roundabout will be reduced to one lane from 9am to 3pm, and on Tuesday 29 July the SH1 (Hamilton side) approach will be reduced to one lane for southbound traffic from 9am to 3pm (weather permitting).

The lane closures enable some minor remedial repairs to the surface of the road, ensuring it meets stringent quality requirements ahead of project completion.

Minor delays are expected in the area, but traffic will continue to use the other north and south bound lanes during this time.

Traffic management will be in place, including a temporary reduced speed limit of 30km/h in the affected lanes, and will be removed at the end of each shift.

After 18 months of construction, the bulk of the work on the SH1/29 roundabout and approach roads in Piarere is complete and the project is on track to be completed in late August this year.

People will continue to see activity over the next few weeks, including landscaping (around 200,000 plants will be in by mid-August) and finishing touches will be applied to the underpasses.

The 60-metre roundabout is designed to improve efficiency, connectivity, and safety on this very important high-volume route. It has also been constructed to allow connection with the future expressway between Cambridge and Piarere.
