More heavy rain likely to affect Taranaki highways – NZTA
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 10 Jul 2025 2:58pm | Taranaki
With more wet weather on the way for an already saturated region, Taranaki drivers are being urged to keep a close eye on the latest road conditions before travelling over the next several days.
Metservice has issued a Heavy Rain Watch for Taranaki north of the Maunga, in place from 11am to midnight tomorrow (Friday 11 July).
Because the Taranaki region has already suffered extensive heavy rain over the past few weeks, soils are saturated and extra rain brings a risk of more flooding, slips, and rockfalls.
This means drivers must exercise caution, drive to the conditions, and be alert to the possibility of weather-related hazards.
Wet roads are slippery roads, and driving at the speed limit can be too fast for the conditions. Reduce your speed, increase your following distance, avoid sudden braking, and make sure your headlights are on if visibility is poor.
Flood waters can hide hidden dangers and water flows may be stronger than they appear – drivers are urged not to drive through flooded areas and to respect any road closures that may be in place.
A strong wind warning is also in place for Taranaki south of the Maunga, from noon to 11pm on Friday 11 July. Damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures is possible. Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
Road users should check road and weather conditions before they travel. Drivers are also encouraged to report any faults they see on the state highway network , by calling 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49).
