More improvements on the way for State Highway 2 Masterton

A key roundabout on State Highway 2 in Masterton is in line for maintenance and resurfacing work in April.
Contractors will carry out night works at the SH2 Chapel Street/Renall Street roundabout from Monday, 6 April until Wednesday, 8 April, between 9 pm and 4:30 am each night.
Part of the ongoing state highway summer maintenance programme, the work will see the roundabout resurfaced. It follows similar work completed further north between the Queen Street/SH2 roundabout and Te Ore Ore Road(external link).
The area being resurfaced carries over 16,000 vehicles daily. The planned works will improve its grip and skid resistance, making it safer for drivers and the public.
NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance appreciate that roadworks like this can cause traffic delays. However, they are essential and help prevent larger, costlier, and more disruptive repairs later on.
The work will be done at night when traffic volumes are lower to reduce disruption for drivers. However, it will require a full road closure at the roundabout intersection.
Local road detours (see map below) will be available but will require extra travel time. Drivers should plan accordingly. The route is also approved for heavy vehicles.
Resurfacing works are weather-dependent. Dry conditions are essential for them to be effective and long-lasting. It means schedules may change if wet weather occurs. Drivers are encouraged to stay up-to-date on road conditions before they travel.
Works schedule and detour map:
- Monday, 6 April to Wednesday, 8 April. 9 pm – 4:30 am.
- SH2 CLOSED at SH2 Chapel Street/Renall Street roundabout
- Local road detours available and approved for heavy vehicles
