More rain on its way for northern Taranaki; expect more slips and delays

If you’re travelling on State Highway 3 between Taranaki and Waikato in coming days, please be extra careful and drive to conditions.

Crews are continuing to assess damage on the highway between Mokau and Piopio caused by extensive rainfall and flooding last week.

There have been minor slips overnight around SH3 Awakino and stop/go traffic management is in place through the gorge.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi System Manager for Taranaki and Manawatū/Whanganui, Liesl Dawson says the road is open but people need to be prepared for extensive delays.

“We’re dealing with already very sodden land around and under the road. We’re also expecting more rain and strong winds over the coming days.

“This means we could see more flooding and more slips. If you’re travelling through, especially for the long weekend, please take extra care.

“People can expect significant delays and we’re asking people to factor those delays in and plan your trip accordingly.

“Drive to the conditions and be alert to the possibility of more flooding, slips, debris, tree branches on the road.

“It’ll also be important to keep up to date with NZTA’s Journey Planner as short notice closures may be a possibility.

“It’s been a tough fortnight for the local communities in northern Taranaki. Their support is very much appreciated as we know it’s frustrating to have the road closed at times. We don’t take the decision to close roads lightly and we need to ensure the safety of everyone who lives alongside and uses the road,” says Ms Dawson.
