More wet weather set to affect state highways in the top of the South Island

With another bout of heavy rain forecast yet again for top of the South Island, local drivers will need to keep a close eye on the status of regional state highways on Tuesday.

Metservice has issued a Heavy Rain Warning for areas around Golden Bay, Nelson, and Marlborough from early Tuesday morning until Tuesday night.

The weather will hit areas already affected by severe weather events in late June and earlier this month.

It may affect:

  • State Highway 60 - Richmond to Collingwood
  • State Highway 6 – Nelson to Kawatiri Junction
  • State Highway 6 – Nelson to Havelock
  • State Highway 63 – Renwick to Kawatiri Junction

Because the region’s roads have already suffered extensive heavy rain and weather damage over the past month, more bad weather increases the risk of further disruption.

With up to 150 mm of rain predicted for some areas, there is the possibility for flooding, slips, and rockfalls – and a chance of roads being closed at short notice.

Road users must exercise caution, drive to the conditions, and be alert to the possibility of weather-related hazards and state highway closures.

If roads are closed due to the weather, drivers must obey them. Closures are put in place to keep the public safe. Roads will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.

Flood waters can also hide hidden dangers and water flows may be stronger than they appear – drivers are urged not to drive through flooded areas as bow waves from vehicles can increase damage to properties.

Local state highways will be monitored, and contractors are on call to respond to incidents as they arise. Drivers are encouraged to report any faults they see on the state highway network.

People are encouraged to stay up to date on all the latest information and check road and weather conditions before they travel.
