New road surface on its way for SH2 north of Napier

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 17 Oct 2025 9:45am | Hawke’s Bay

Crews will be chipsealing and asphalting a stretch of State Highway 2 between Westshore and Bay View, north of Napier, from later this month.

The work will be carried out overnight 6 nights a week, Sunday night to Friday night, between 8pm and 5am, from Monday 27 October. Each week, work will finish at 5am Saturdays.

During the work, stop/go traffic management will be in place between Onehunga Road and Watchman Road/Meeanee Quay roundabout. A 30km/h temporary speed limit will also be in place.

The work is expected to be complete Tuesday 18 November, weather permitting.

During the overnight work, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is advising people travelling through the site to allow for delays of up to 10 minutes. Emergency services will be assisted through the site.

The road will be back to 2 lanes during the day while work is not being carried out, and a temporary reduced speed limit of 50km/h will be in place.

Please adhere to the lower speed limits in place, and be careful when driving over any loose chip. By adhering to the speed limits in place, vehicles can help embed the new seal, while also avoid loose chip flicking up and damaging cars and road.

The work follows the pre-seal repairs carried out earlier this month in this section. It is standard for pre-seal repairs, such as pothole filling, to be carried out before new seal is applied to the road.

We will be returning later this season to the area to complete further pavement works at different sections of the state highway. More details on that will be confirmed in due course.
